The girls were supposed to wear dresses and the boys were supposed to wear smokings, according to the email from the choir. I was going to sing in the choir and be the host og the evening, but I wasn’t comfortable in those dresses, so I asked if I could wear a tuxedo instead. The answer was no, since they considered me a girl and said I had to wear the girls’ clothes.
When I started high school, we were going to have a dance performance in a subject class—something I had been looking forward to because I love dancing. However, the girls were given one choreography and the boys another. When we girls were told we would have to wear high heels and short shorts, while the boys wore trousers and did hip-hop, I became upset and asked if I could switch to the boys’ group. Again, the answer was no. So instead of doing hip-hop I had to run instead, every time there was dance practice, I ran followed by strength training, while I dreamed of a world where people were not divided by gender.
